Ted Mullin was a high school swimmer for New Trier High School and swam for Carlton College before his life was cut short by sarcoma. The Ted Mullin Fund was begun by his parents and supported initially by those who knew and loved him.
The Ted Mullin Fund strives to raise awareness of sarcoma, a diverse, rare group of malignancies that affect bone, muscle, fat, peripheral nerves and soft tissues. Little research and drug development funding exists for these diseases. The Fund supports sarcoma research and the introduction of new therapies for treatment of sarcoma at The University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital. With focused fundraising and education, we strive to improve the lives of adolescents and young adults who are disproportionately affected by the disease.

Details
The annual "Leave it in the Pool" event features an “hour-of-power” relay practice. The set is one of the Carleton College Knights’ favorites, and the team felt it would be an appropriate memorial to Ted to run a “Leave it in the Pool” practice consisting of continuous relays—any stroke, all-out swimming—for an hour, with the objective of keeping all lanes in each pool on the same length.
Swimming the "Hour of Power" simultaneously across the country on one afternoon adds to the spirit and fun of the relay. However, those teams unable to participate at the scheduled date/times are encouraged to hold a relay event whenever possible. Other dryland teams may run bases, run the track, or serve volleyballs, etc. There is a way that any team can participate!!!
The participants in the event are asked to gather donations for the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Sarcoma Research at the University of Chicago Medicine Comer Children's Hospital. Checks should be made payable to "FJC/Ted Mullin Fund FSP" with the team name in the memo line, and mailed to the Ted Mullin Fund, P.O. Box 437, Winnetka, IL 60093-0437. Donations may also be made online. All donations made to the Ted Mullin Fund are tax deductible to the extent allowed by United States law.
We encourage participation to raise team spirit and sarcoma awareness whether or not your program is able to fund raise.

About the Ted Mullin Fund for Pediatric Sarcoma Research
Where Does the Money Go?
Money raised acts as seed funding for the University of Chicago Medicine (UCM) pediatric sarcoma research program. The Ted Mullin Fund has supported research into novel chemotherapy/biology agents for sarcomas, new ways to administer chemotherapy in this disease, techniques to visualize more accurately the tumor response in the patient, novel genomics strategies to identify high-risk sarcoma patients, molecular techniques to personalize therapy to maximize benefit while reducing treatment-related toxicity and treatments for metastatic or resistant disease that use the patient’s own immune system to attack residual tumors.
Each summer, the UCM hosts Ted Mullin Fund Scholars in pediatric cancer laboratories, giving collegiate Ted Mullin “Hour of Power” participants an opportunity to advance their interest in science and cancer biology during a 10-week program.
UCM is celebrating the 12th anniversary of the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Program, a collaborative program offering coordinated care for young adults ages 15-30 with cancer. Future plans include, in collaboration with other national programs, the establishment of a consortium to facilitate more rapid development and availability of new molecular and biologic therapeutics.
